In the later part of the evening on Wednesday, April 21st, 2004 Roy and I learned of the passing of one of the Divas at our favorite watering hole, the Jungle. Cookie was a mainstay in this club for many years...something like 25 years as a matter of fact. For many "Jungle" was identified as "Cookie". She served as surragute mother to many young gay men and women as they came into this old "dive" of a bar. It may have been a dive, but for those people it was a bit of home, and Cookie was indeed "momma". Roy, my roommate was one of those young men and I can remember when we first got together, the first thing he wanted to do was to take me to see his "momma". Fortunately momma approved. (smile)
Cookie was always a great one to perform with her fantastic outfits and wigs of various hues..from platiunun blonde to coal black, she always put on a show. She will be missed. But we will remember her fondly as the girl that loved to do shows, and encourage all the upcoming performers by doing everything she could to help them get into the business. Most recently she welcomed this old queen out of retirement by offering me the opportunity to perform "anytime ya want to". That is indeed a friendly and almost unheard of gesture in a business most known for its competitive and sometimes vicious tendancies. Cookie was always different!!! We will indeed miss her...but with a smile as well as a tear. Here are a few pictures.
